Our mission statement is "To establish and maintain the achievement of high quality, relevant hairdressing qualifications as an essential investment for the industry and its clients". Our role is to make sure that industry training standards are maintained, and that the information and skills being taught are correct and relevant. We also administer the apprenticeship programme, including the delivery of on and off job training.

A division of the Marine Industry Association, BITO's special character as an industry training organisation is built on the long tradition of apprenticeships in New Zealand's boating industry. From successful trailer power boats to internationally acclaimed super yachts and race winning performance yachts, the New Zealand marine industry is forecast to double in size over the next 10 to 15 years and is dependant on a strong and well trained work force.

The New Zealand Horticulture Industry Training Organisation Inc.(NZHITO) manages training in the horticultural industry of New Zealand. We currently offer eight National Certificates in Horticulture, which cover the industry sectors of; Amenity Horticulture, FruitProduction, Production Horticulture, Landscape, Nursery Production, Viticulture, Floristry and Arboriculture. Today the we have more than 1800 people registered with the NZHITO doing horticulture based training, of these approximately one/third are Modern Apprentices.


The ITO is the standard setting body for plumbing, gasfitting,drainlaying and roofing. The ITO sets skill standards for roofing, plumbing, gasfitting and drainlaying in consultation with industry and develops arrangements for the delivery of training. This includes: registering apprentices, recording and monitoring apprentices and moderating results to ensure standards are being maintained.

Gaining skills in joinery is a combination of practical experience and theoretical knowledge. The Joinery ITO has developed a system of training which incorporates both on and off job training. Formal teaching is given at polytechnics, while experience is gained in the factory where on-job instruction is received from experienced tradesmen.
